In Roman times, a wheat or barley cake was broken over the bride’s head as a symbol of fertility and prosperity. The newlyweds would eat the crumbs together to unify themselves as a married couple. Guests would gather around to collect the crumbs, believing they brought good luck. By the medieval period, barley bread was switched to spiced bunds, cookies, and scones which were stacked as high as they could. The couple would then have to attempt to kiss over the tower of sweets, and if they were successful, it meant good fortune was upon them. Eventually, this custom changed to the bride and groom cutting a stack of spiced buns to symbolize their unity. Over time, the practice evolved into the tiered cakes we know today, with each tier symbolizing prosperity and fertility. Wedding cakes were not originally white, rather colorful, but this changed in the early 20th century when Queen Victoria had a white cake for her wedding. As wedding cakes became more elaborate, so did the customs surrounding them, leading to the ornate creations we see at weddings today.
